Jim Dine – Walking Memories: 1959-1969
Jim Dine’s expressive paintings of every-day items have placed him alongside such pop art pioneers as Warhol, Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg. But Dine’s work appears more intimate and searching than his prankster contemporaries. ‘Walking Memories’ is part of a Guggenheim series on the early work of leading American artists, and explores Dine’s rapid rise through New York’s ‘happenings’ scene in the 60s to iconic status, after which his work extended to sculpture and print-making and assumed a more personal focus.
Ideas to help you get a cheaper Rail Pass
Cheaper rail passes that include just one-or, in some cases, a few-countries are also available. If you’re going only to France, for example, you might consider a France Railpass, which allows for three days of travel in one month for $160 (2nd Class). If you want to swing up to Britain for a few days, consider the BritFrance Railpass-shunned by ardent patriots in both countries-good for rail travel in France and Great Britain for five days within a one-month period. The BritFrance Railpass costs $280 (2nd Class).
These suggestions only scratch the surface. Passes restricted to Eastern European countries are becoming increasingly popular, and many special combo packages now allow for a joint rail pass and automobile rental option in one. Such a pass can make the normally restrictive rates of car-rental abroad close to affordable (especially if you’re willing to squeeze three or four people into a Citroen).
Schubert
Pianist Imogen Cooper and musicians from the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra perform Schubert’s String Trio and ‘Trout’ Quintet.
Sound Clash
Being the dub fountain from which hip hop, drum’n'bass and many other currently popular forms of dance music were born, Jamaica is now happily reappropriating a lot of the new sounds it help to inspire. Apparently crossover works both ways, and this weekly evening hopes to cover both directions. The Controverse All Stars, Skank Around Soundsystem and their guests will be heating up the dance floor as they hop from hip hop to ska, techno to dancehall, breakbeat to rocksteady and ragga to jungle.
Drink, sleep and freeze!
Here’s an economical tip if you’re going camping. Buy a cask of wine – drink it, then wash it out with water – freeze it and use it to keep an eski cold, when it’s melted you have fresh water to drink. When you’ve drunk the water, you can blow it up and use it as a comfortable pillow.
